Who we are

Painters who start with the prep

We are a Washington, DC painting company working out of Brookland, on Edgewood St NE near the Brookland-CUA Metro and Catholic University. We paint the houses this city is known for: porch-front rowhouses, Victorian fronts on Capitol Hill, Colonials and Tudors in upper Northwest, and the condos and apartments that have filled in around them.

Most of what we do is ordinary work done carefully. We scrape and sand before we prime. We fix plaster and rotten trim rather than caulking over them. We treat older paint as if it contains lead until a test says otherwise, and we follow lead-safe work practices when we disturb it. Then we put on two finish coats and walk the job with you.

We paint across all eight wards of DC and in nearby Maryland and Virginia, including Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Bethesda, Arlington County and Alexandria. See every area we serve.

How we work

What you can expect on every job

  • The phone is answered 24/7

Call at any hour and a person picks up. We take the details, answer what we can on the spot and set a walkthrough time.

  • Written prices before work

After the walkthrough you get a written scope and price. Nothing is booked until you have read it and agreed.

  • Homes treated like homes

Furniture is moved and put back, floors are covered, and rooms are usable each evening. We tell you what happens the next day before we leave.

  • Color decided in your light

Samples go on your walls before paint is ordered, so the color you live with is the one you chose.

Guides from Rufus Hartwell

Rufus Hartwell, our paint blog editor, writes the guides on our Paint Blog. They answer the questions we hear on walkthroughs: when to paint outside in DC, how to treat brick, what lead-safe work involves and how long each surface lasts.
