Short answer
In Tenleytown we mostly paint interiors and kitchen cabinets in detached houses from the 1920s through the 1950s, plus condos near Wisconsin Avenue. Cabinet refinishing is our most requested single job here. A visit starts with a walkthrough, a look at the cabinet material and current finish, then a written price and a start date.
How a Tenleytown kitchen cabinet refinish runs
Painted cabinets are the most common project we do here, often in a kitchen that's sound but dated.
- Coat 01
Check the cabinet material
We look at whether the boxes and doors are solid wood, veneer or MDF, and what finish is on them now. Oak with open grain may need grain filler for a smooth look, which we'll talk through with you.
- Coat 02
Remove doors and label
Doors and drawer fronts come off and are labeled by position. Hinges and hardware are bagged. Boxes stay in place and get masked so counters, appliances and floors are protected.
- Coat 03
Degrease and scuff
Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease, especially near the range. We clean with a degreaser, rinse, then scuff sand every surface so the primer has something to grip.
- Coat 04
Prime with a bonding primer
A bonding primer goes on doors and boxes. On oak and other tannin-rich woods, we use a stain-blocking primer so the wood color doesn't bleed through light paint.
- Coat 05
Spray the finish
Doors are sprayed off site or in a protected area, two coats of a hard cabinet enamel. Boxes are sprayed or brushed in place, depending on the kitchen layout and ventilation.
- Coat 06
Rehang and adjust
Once the finish has cured enough to handle, doors go back up, hinges are adjusted so gaps line up, and hardware is reinstalled. A typical kitchen runs $4,350 to $8,900.
Tenleytown houses from Wisconsin Avenue to Fort Reno
Tenleytown grew from a crossroads tavern settlement into a streetcar neighborhood in the early 1900s. Most of its houses went up in the 1920s through the 1950s: brick and frame Colonials, Cape Cods, Tudor-style houses and bungalows on the streets around Wisconsin Avenue, Nebraska Avenue and Fort Reno Park, which sits on the highest point in the city. American University's campus lies to the southwest, and Wisconsin Avenue holds shops, apartments and condo buildings near the Metro.
Inside, the houses are generally simpler than the older ones east of Connecticut. Many have plaster walls on rock lath, painted wood trim and modest crown molding. Kitchens are often small and were updated in the 1970s through the 1990s with oak or painted cabinets, which is why so many owners here call about refinishing rather than replacement.
Rentals near the university turn over every year or two, and many need full repaints between tenants. For those, see our rental turnover painting service.

Interior paint problems common in Tenleytown homes
These issues come up often enough that we look for them in every room.
Peeling cabinet paint from a past DIY
Cabinets rolled with wall paint, or painted without degreasing, peel at the handles and edges within a year or two. We strip loose areas and refinish properly with a bonding primer and enamel through our cabinet painting service.
Oak tannin bleeding through white
Painting oak cabinets or trim white without the right primer lets tannins yellow the finish. We seal with a stain-blocking primer first so the white stays white.
Scuffed walls in stair halls
Stairways in Cape Cods and Colonials take daily scuffs. Flat paint marks easily here, so we suggest eggshell or satin on stair walls, which can be wiped clean.
Cracked plaster at ceiling corners
Rock lath plaster often cracks where walls meet ceilings. We tape and skim these cracks so they don't return in a season, then repaint the whole ceiling.
Worn trim and doors
Baseboards, door edges and casings get chipped by vacuums and furniture. We fill dings, sand and repaint in a harder semi-gloss enamel that resists the next round.
Scheduling interior work in Tenleytown
Interior jobs are less weather dependent, but the area has its own timing patterns.
- Many detached houses have driveways, so parking is easier here than near Wisconsin Avenue.
- Condo buildings near the Metro usually ask for a certificate of insurance, elevator reservations and set work hours.
- Rental units near American University are busiest to turn over in May, June and August, so book early for those months.
- Cabinet jobs take about a week, during which your kitchen is usable but doors are off.
- Tenleytown is not a historic district, so interior and exterior color choices are your own.
Neighbors in Chevy Chase DC to the north and Cleveland Park to the east share many of the same house types.

Questions from Tenleytown homeowners
How long does cabinet painting take in a Tenleytown kitchen?
A typical Tenleytown kitchen takes about five to eight working days, from removing doors to rehanging them. Cabinet enamel needs time to cure between coats, so we don't rush it. You can still use your kitchen during most of the work, though doors and drawer fronts will be off for several days.
Can you paint oak cabinets in a Tenleytown kitchen without the grain showing?
Yes, if you want a smooth finish. Oak has open grain that shows through paint. We can fill the grain with a grain filler before priming, which adds time and cost but gives a flat, smooth look. If you like some texture, we skip the filler and the grain shows softly through the paint.
Do you paint condos near the Tenleytown Metro?
Yes. We plan around building rules on elevators, work hours and noise. A one-bedroom condo typically runs $1,950 to $3,900. Call (771) 247-4038 to set up a walkthrough, and ask your building manager what paperwork they need from a painting company before we start.
